About Shaligram
Ammonites were spiral-shelled marine animals that lived millions of years ago. As the Himalayas rose, rock containing their fossils was lifted high into the mountains, and river erosion along the Kali Gandaki gradually reveals them today.
In Hindu tradition, Shaligram is regarded as a sacred form of Lord Vishnu, and devotees keep it in a home shrine or puja room. Interpretations of a stone’s markings vary between traditions and families, so we describe each stone as a natural object and leave religious guidance to your own practice and teachers.
Keeping a Shaligram
Many devotees place it on a clean cloth or small stand in their mandir. Collectors also value Shaligrams as remarkable natural specimens of Himalayan geology. Natural variation in size and colour should be expected, as every stone is different.
It is a meaningful gift for someone who follows or appreciates Hindu tradition.
Care
Handle the stone with clean hands, keep it in a dry place, and wipe it gently with a soft cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners and abrasive brushes, which can damage the fossil surface.
